WOOLWORTHS and project partner, developer Time & Place are set to submit plans for a mixed use development in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs that will be anchored by a new supermarket.
The parties acquired the 4,306 sqm site at 173 Burke Rd in Glen Iris during the year for about $30 million with plans to transform the older-style office site.
The project will have underground car parking with direct access to the supermarket and terraced homes above. Subject to planning approval, it would create around 250 jobs and 120 ongoing retail jobs once complete.
Woolworths state development manager, Don Foulds said the site has been identified for regeneration as part of Stonnington Council’s strategic plan for Burke Rd.
“We will shortly be submitting plans to Stonnington Council and we will be engaging with local residents and businesses in the new year.
“Our proposed designs aim to reflect the unique local character of Glen Iris while delivering on Stonnington Council’s vision for high quality housing and convenient shopping for the area.”
The proposal is designed by architecture firm Carr and will be targeting a 4-Star Green Star Rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. The project will aim to bridge the gap between townhouse and apartment living, the partners said, with external corridors interspersed between the one-, two- and three-bedroom residences.
Each residence will feature its own external entry that allows for dual aspect and improved daylight and crossflow ventilation, and for energy efficiencies.
Time & Place principal, Edward Pearse said the design forward “does not look like a traditional apartment block”.
“It takes cues from suburban living and Australian Modernism to improve this underutilised portion of the Burke Rd.
“We’re conscious of delivering a high-quality retail outcome. The design considers careful integration of the residential and retail elements to ensure a quality living and shopping experience for all end-users.
“We’ve looked to bring the best of traditional terraced homes – from their sustainable design and down to the entry experience – to a higher density project.”
Communal open space and landscaping are integrated in a way that allows for visible natural elements from all internal viewpoints.
