MACQUARIE Group has appointed Brookfield Multiplex to construct its new headquarters at 48 – 50 Martin Place in Sydney's CBD.
The refurbishment will transform the historic banking chamber into a state-of-the-art commercial workspace over 11 levels, including a new two-story glass-domed roof and glass shuttle lifts.
Brookfield Multiplex regional managing director David Ghannoum said the group first worked with Macquarie some years ago to deliver its One Shelley St office at King Street Wharf.
“Macquarie told us they want an iconic workplace that provides connection and flexibility for staff, while preserving the heritage elements of the building. We are dedicated to working with them to achieve that vision,” he added.
Macquarie Group head of business services Will Walker said the landmark heritage-listed building was constructed between 1925 and 1928 and is a rare Australian example of the American influenced Inter-War Beaux-Arts style.
Architects Johnson Pilton Walker has designed the new workspace with a signature central atrium to the core of the building topped with a new steel-frame glass dome to enable natural light to filter through all levels.
The project is targeting a 6 Star Green Star Design & As-Built rating.
Ground-floor tenant, the Commonwealth Bank, will continue to operate its branch and safe custody offices while works are undertaken. Early construction works have already commenced on 48 – 50 Martin Place and Brookfield Multiplex anticipates completion by the end of July, 2014.
